Absolutely beautiful one of a kind hand embroidered sampler map of England and Wales. Dated 1811.
The detail of the towns on each county is just lovely as is the phonetic spelling of some places (isle of Wight/white) . The North Sea is named the German Ocean. (The name changed after WW1) the intricacies on this piece is lovely- the flowers at the top are so pretty.
I think it’s silk on what looks to be canvas backing.
For its age it’s in great condition, few small holes and marks in places, nothing major at all considering its age .And I’m sure the fabric is discolored due to its great age.
The plain back frame it’s currently in doesn’t do it justice at all and would be stunning reframed in an antique gold frame!
Some of the paper on the back of the frame has come away. Frame measures 18.5” x 21.75”.
