Inside the distributor cap there are up to 30,000 Volts between the live parts. The spark discharge between the distributor rotor and the HT lead contacts generate heat and a high proportion of aggressive nitrogen oxides. Extreme demands are therefore made of the chemical resistance and tracking resistance of the distributor cap.
