Cuauhtlatoatzin, also known as Juan Diego, was a Nahua peasant and Marian visionary born in 1474 in Cuautitlán, near modern-day Mexico City. He is best known for his apparitions of the Virgin Mary in December 1531. The Virgin Mary appeared to him on Tepeyac Hill and requested that a shrine be built in her honor. When the local bishop asked for proof, Juan Diego presented his tilma (cloak) with the miraculous image of the Virgin imprinted on it. This event led to the construction of a major pilgrimage site. Juan Diego was later canonized as a saint, becoming the first indigenous saint from the Americas.
